The hinterlands of paranormal websites lead two investigators to an oppressive landscape haunted by legend and rumour. As well as having all the elements of a classic tale of terror, ‘Dimmer’ has the oppressive ink-black thread of the best modern British folk horror running through it. Stokes builds a sense of dread with impeccable timing and chill-laden scene setting worthy of Robert Aickman or Andrew Michael Hurley.

Ashley Stokes’ strange new tale drags wyrd England into the half light. The narrator's insistent reproaches to her partner give his story a dislocated atmosphere: something bad is happening, or will happen soon if he fails to heed her. Stokes vindicates the belief that festers in the blood: that there are places that still carry the curse of what happened there. Read with the lights on.
